Hi! My Name Is Duke

I'm Available
The sweetest weim ever!  Loves everyone and especially loves cuddles. Duke had an awful start in life - He was kept outdoors 24 hours a day for the first 4 years of his life. And this was in Northern Wisconsin... can you imagine? Duke protected his two fur siblings Misty and Willow (also available for adoption through GLWR); which is why this boy has such a high prey drive. Duke has been living with his foster family in Dorr, Michigan.  They've been extremely patient and done a significant amount of positive reinforcement training.  He's come such a long way in 6 months. Duke is intelligent and very eager to learn and please. Duke is looking for an active, loving family with a large fenced in yard. At night his prey drive is very high and therefore needs to be watched at all times.  Duke is a strong boy and exhibits semi-alpha behavior {with a male dogs that are alpha-like too} and will do best with a non-alpha male or female dog in the home. Duke would also be fine with being a solo dog.
Duke's new owner must be:
  • someone with previous weim experience
  • physically active 7 days a week
  • willing to continue with his training - He's come so far!
Duke's new home must have:
  • A fenced in yard
  • Children 12 or older
  • NO small animals or cats (due to high prey drive)
Notes from Duke's Foster Mom Lisa:
Duke is crate-trained and spends time in it when left alone. He also sleeps in it; but would prefer to cuddle up with someone.  (Once acclimated in his new home, I believe he will be fine sleeping outside his crate).  I toss a treat in the crate and Duke goes straight in.
Duke has some typical Weim behavours such as counter-surfing for food in the kitchen; and being "mouthy": gettting your attention by mouthing your hand or arm. When he plays actively; he needs to reminded to be "gentle", but has shown zero incidents of aggressive behavior with people. His favorite toy is a nylon food grade bone. The best home for Duke will be someone that is patient and able to give him a lot of attention and exercise.  He has been trained the past several months positively and has never been hit or mistreated. Despite being neglected and left in the elements, Duke shows no signs of abuse...Quite the opposite - he is so loving!  My prayer is that he finds a loving, active family.  Duke is a great dog and deserves to have the BEST LIFE EVER!
