Benson & William

I wanted to send you an email and let you know that Benson is doing great.  He has really adjusted to his new home and he is finally starting to show some of his true personality!

We have opted not to use his crate much as he was getting nervous and having accidents and vomiting...so he just has free roam of the house.  He is super with the kids, he lets William  get away with about anything, but they spend a lot of time playing together.

Today we discovered that we could all play T-ball together, I pitch or stand out in the field and William will hit it and Benson goes and gets the ball and brings it back...we are still working on the "give part"!

I have attached a picture of him and Will, I just wanted you to know that all is well:)

We went into this adoption with what we thought were  ours eyes & mind wide open, ready to care for & love a  rescued Weim............. Zeurst, a 2 yr old male with lots of love & pranks chose us.

We have went for  many walks where he has definitely led the way. He has  convinced us that WE needed to go to obedience classes  and HE has reluctantly agreed to go with us. We  have  recently started our obedience classes & are hopeful for  good results for him & us. The teacher said someone had trained him already, now we just have to show him we have been trained also....haha

He  however continues to prove on a daily basis  how  grateful he is to be in his forever home & has shown us  more love than we could ever had expected. (although he thinks that he is a Chihuahua) We wonder from  time to time if it was a good move or not, BUT no matter  what, he has found his forever home.

We love him & cannot imagine our life without our ball of  energy........Zeurst.

Hi all! My name is Rommel. I’m a very handsome, tall, neutered 3 yr. old male Weim. I was found as a stray but don’t let that fool you, I am an outstanding boy.

My foster parents say I’m a bit of a couch potato but I love to be outside too. I have great recall, excellent manners, I love to play with other dogs and I like playing with my 8 & 9 yr. old human foster brothers. I’m also good with cats but, I get pretty excited when they are around and just wanna play! I know sit, stay and down. I’m allowed to roam freely around the house without any problems. With a little work, I’m capable of much more. My foster dad says I need a bit of work walking on a leash though. I just love walks!

I love my foster home but would also like to be a permanent part of a forever family. I would really like to have a very loving family who has time to give me all the attention I need and deserve.

Your friend, Rommel

Hi there Nicole! I can't believe that it's been six whole months since you gave me to my fur-ever family! It's really gone by fast, and you wouldn't believe how happy I am here. I smile my big, goofy Weimaraner smile every single day, I just love it here! I definitely know I'm one spoiled girl, my Dad just LOVES to give me kisses and tell me how pretty I am -- he does it every day. And I talk back to him too, we have whole conversations of yips and whines and "moo" noises. That's what my family calls me a lot now -- Maggie Moo. Mom says it's cuz I have a "cow" spot, big eyelashes and I make funny noises. My stupid brother says it's because I'm fat and eat a lot. I like Mom's explanation better :-)

So guess what?!?! I GRADUATED from school!!! I am really, really good at sitting when I'm told to, and I lay on my bed like a good girl all the time. I don't like to lay down much, but if Mom has a cookie, then I guess I could lay down -- but just for a minute! And you should see my play with my brother -- he's such a little wimp, I can push him around, no problem! He's no match for a super Weim like me :-)

So Mom was telling me that the stupid snow is going away soon, and I got all excited cuz she said that once it's gone, I get to come see you and Angel and Coen at the dog park!!! Won't that be great?!?!? Will you give me a hug, like you used to? My new mom gives good hugs, but I still like yours the best, because you were my first mom!! And Mom told me that you're going to be a mom again?? Are you having a puppy, like I did before?!?!? Really?!?!? That's so cool! Guess what?? SO'S MY MOM, her puppy is due in October! Pretty neat!! Oh, and if you need any advice on raising your puppy, just ask me, cuz I've done it a time or six, remember?!?!?!

So yeah, things are good here. Only one little problem is that my mom's being kind of mean to me and she's not feeding me as much. Something to do with me getting fat from eating all of my dumb brother's food. (Not that Mom has much room to talk, she's getting fat too!!) I heard Mom and Dad talking when they thought I was sleeping the other day, Mom was saying something about my thyroid or something, said I have to go to the doctor to get a test. I don't like the doctor, but I like the cookies they give me, so I guess I can go just this once. But they better have some cookies, or I'm leaving!

I really hope things are good with you and Joe and the gang! I made my mom promise that she'd send you this letter, cuz I really want to see you all this spring :-) I miss you all so much (well, not the cats so much, because they never let me eat them. They're no fun....), and hope to see you soon, k?? Promise?? Cool, then I can show you my pretty new collar Mom got me!! It's by some store called Coach, and I KNOW it's a really nice thing, because she yelled at me for trying to chew it off. hehehe!!!

Ooops, gotta run, Dad's pulling the hot dogs off of the grill, and I just KNOW he's going to drop one on the ground 'on accident'. You know how what pushovers....er, how "clumsy" Dad's are ;-) hehehe.

Loveya, bye...... Maggie Moo.

Remember Carmen? She's now adored as Durham...look at her now!

So, I got adopted in August and went to my new home in September, 2007.  You may remember me as Carmen, but Mom gave me a new name to go with my new home.  I am Durham now.  Everyone thinks it is a cool name and strong to go with my personality.  Mom also calls me Little Miss when I am…well a puppy can’t listen all the time.

I know I haven’t checked in for a while, but I have been busy.  I found my new home.  I learned that I am not the boss…Mom’s tuff but she loves me.  And, let’s face it I need some tuff; I can be a bit of a pre-Madonna. I graduated from Puppy Grade School. I know lots of “tricks” now.  Mom says I get to go back to school in the Spring.  I am excited about school, new buddies and new tricks.  We are going to work on recall and distraction.  Mom says I have ADD.

I also got big. I know you thought I wouldn’t be that big, but I fooled you and Mom.  I am a big girl (23 inches –sexy long legs and 65 pounds of muscle).  My eyes are still green, just like Mom’s and don’t look like they will be changing according to the Doc.  I also still have the same coloring, and as you can see from the pictures I am quite the puppy.  I also found my voice.  I didn’t talk for two months and now I let Mom know when we have company.  The pizza guy is scared of me, but I can’t see why.  I am just saying hi.

I had lots of firsts: first Thanksgiving, first Christmas, first I got to the squirrel before Mom, first time getting to go to the different dog parks, learning about children (fun), learning about strangers –they are bad if your mom and dad haven’t told you, first time sick –Mom was super worried and she stayed home with me for two days.  Well you get the idea, a busy puppy life.  In addition to all these firsts for me, mom had some too—first time leaving the room for a minute –bye bye heels and sandals.  In my defense, I was a lot younger and I was just trying them on for size.  They did fit in my mouth after all.  Mom also found out puppies can be claustrophobic. Yep, I like my crate okay but I get a little nervous if I am in there for longer than a couple of hours.  It is okay though, through trial and error mom has puppy proofed, and just in time for me to be one.  I go to daycare during the day (I love my pals) to stay out of trouble. Just in case you’re wondering how full - proofing for a puppy works-- I found some neat stuff one day (DVDs and some office stuff) and mom panicked that I had eaten the stuff I found…I didn’t but she wasn’t happy and she was very worried about me.  Mom also learned that I am very curious and leaving her Blackberry out was a bad idea.  She talks on it all the time, I tried and now mom gets teased at work, and no I didn’t eat that either…just tried to use it with my teeth.  With all these adventures in the house, mom decided what was best for me and her sanity was daycare while she isn’t home to watch me.  Don’t feel bad for me.  I love it.  I have several friends at daycare that I see every day and the people there know me very well.  I am usually tired when I go home at night but Mom gets a daily report on my behavior, so I have learned to behave when she isn’t around.  I also learned that I love my K-9 counterparts and I am not trying to boss anyone around anymore so I have made even more friends.

Tonette, thanks for being there for me in the beginning.  You picked a great mom.  I am well on my way to what she told you would be Miss Manners.    She is good.  I apparently have the guilty look and when she asks “what did you do?” I can’t lie. I lower my head and show her.  So thanks for the help! Mom also said that we are going to buy a house with a huge yard for me and I get to have a brother or sister to play with…that looks kinda like me.  So, keep me in mind for a playmate.  I hope you like the pictures.

Hazzie here! I am sure you don't even remember me; I wasn't with GLWR that long before I was adopted. My Mom says that it was because I gave her and Dad my belly every chance I could get when they came to see all of us Weims, that they just couldn't leave without me.

Gosh I am glad that strategy worked, because I couldn't be happier! I have a whole house all to myself, a box full of toys, beds in every room and so much more.  Mom and I go to Grandma's almost everyday so I can run with my Aunt Lilo, she is a Jack Russell who happens to thinks she is a Great Dane, weird huh? She is so fun; we run and hunt and hunt and run. Though I love my grandmas, grandpas and aunts, I love my Mom and Dad the most.

The nurse at the vet told Mom and Dad that we have bonded because I look at them in the eyes and its true, I want to be with them all the time. They love to cuddle with me, which is great because I absolutely love to cuddle. Mom even convinced Dad to let me up on the couches! Over the Christmas holiday I shared my couches with my very first house guests, Lola and Zoe, two pugs whose humans are my parent's really good friends from South Carolina. We had a blast, can't wait to have them over again.

Adjustment has been a piece of cake, I haven't had an accident in the house, I go right to my crate when asked, I can sit, stay, give paw, lay down, but my recall needs a little work, so I am starting obedience class on Sunday. I will keep you all up to date on how that goes. By the way I have seen my parents looking at the GLWR website a lot lately, so I don't know how long I will be an only dog, but that is fine with me because I would love a Weimy friend to play with!

Hazzie

Oscar Oscar

 Oscar and Zoe

Hi all,   Oscar here. I just had to write to you and tell you how thankful I am for your help in finding me a new home. I'm lovin' life. My new Mom's are the best. It didn't take long for my good looks and charm to win them over. They've fallin' for me hook, line and sinker! I've got it made in the shade!! I get to spend my days roughhousing w/ my new Weim friend, chewin' on rawhides, terrorizing the cat, oh wait, I almost forgot I now have to treat the kitty with respect. My new Ma's say he's a family member too and I gotta be nice to him. It was hard but I've come to accept it, especially when I'm dosing off and he starts licking my face all over with his little sand paper tongue, it feels real good! Don't tell my Weim friends about this though, I gotta keep the tough guy facade goin' on!

My favorite days are when big ma takes us hiking. Oh man, it's soooo awesome. I run around like a maniac and pretend I'm huntin' and all. Ma and Zoe were able to teach me real quick that I have to stay within their sight or I lose my offleash privileges. I figured out quick what a good deal this was so no way am I gonna screw this one up. Ma sure knows how to wipe out a couple of Weims. When we get home from our hike we gulp down some water and then hit the sack for some recoup time.

I'm also going to school ya know. I'm currently enrolled in "quit jumping up 101" and "Don't pull on the leash 101". I'm currently only pulling a C- in the leash class and Ma says I gotta keep my GPA above 3.0 so more studying is in order. Next semester I'm taking "counter surfing is not O.K 101" (what's her name never passed this class, tee-hee). I tested out of "Sit 101", "stay 101" and "don't pee in the house 101". I'm such a braniac ya know. Mom say she is soooooo, sooooo happy that I won't need to take " Rolling in dead animals is gross and totally uncalled for 101". She says one dog with this affliction is plenty. I don't really get why Zoe thinks this is so much fun. I mean, gross. This is why she's my buddy but NOT my girlfriend. No wonder she's still single at 7. No problem Ma, I'll be staying away from that weird scene!

I don't have to spend my days locked in a crate (pheww!). Ma only puts me in there for a couple hours at a time. I convinced her that I'm such a good boy, maybe I don't even need that. So, the last several days Zoe and I were free to roam the house. This went well until today when Ma finally figured out what the little splinters of wood on the floor were. I just couldn't help myself, it was wood at just the right height for me to stand around and chomp for awhile. Ma says nope, it's her dining room table and she wants the corners to stay on it. She sprayed some really gross smelling stuff on it and said go ahead Oscar and chomp on it now. I haven't tried it............ yet. But the good news is she wasn't all mean about it. She told me all the war stories of the canines before me and showed me some of the evidence of their crimes that still exist in our home and the nice thing is she didn't give them away because of it. She said she really thinks I have it in me to be a good boy and will give me more chances out of the crate and maybe I'll have to spend more time in it for now until I mature but we'll work it out. Here's the best part of all.................drumrolll........................... I get to sleep in Ma's bed a few nights a week. Oh man, it is the best. It comes with a pillow top mattress, a heated mattress pad and a down comforter! Wow, I never knew sleepin' could be so good. Ma likes to snuggle w/ me and Zoe after she's been at work all day but says it's a good idea to stay familiar with sleeping in the crate too. So, some nights I sleep in the crate and Zoe has her bed right in front of it to sleep by me. She's not crazy about this arrangement as the crate was her bed until I came along. Ma says she's gonna get us a doublewide crate so we can sleep together. I'm down with that so long as stinky girl gets her bath after her rolling gigs.

Well, time for me to sign off. Gotta go convince Ma that tonight's a good night for a couple of Weims in her bed:). Ma is sending pictures in another email because she's having trouble getting them uploaded to this one. Wait until you see how good I look (wink-wink)!! I hope you all are well and Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Love, Oscar

 Oscar and Zoe in Denver

Hi all you great, life saving ladies at GLWR! Oscar here. Man o' man, ma took me and Zoe to Denver and this place is a BLAST!!! We go to a couple of the local off leash parks every weekend to romp around and socialize with all our canine buds. I didn't think it could get better than the hiking in Illinois but it has. I don't have a lot of time to write right now cuz it's bedtime but I do want you to see my pics I'm sending. Theres a great shot of me at the point lookin' like the stud I am (that was at the mountain park we go to). You'll also see some pics of me at Cherry Creek aka Dog Heaven. I like to splash around in the creek when I'm there. Ma tried to get a shot of me running in the creek but I'm too fast so all there is is a half shot of my body flying through the air. You'll also see me w/ a Great Dane I met that day. Man I thought I was big till I saw this dude. Anyways, I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!!!! Love, Oscar

Greycee's parents Greycee

CIRCLE OF LOVE...by Louis & Marilyn Dockstader (Greycee's Parents)

I'm not going to tell you how much we love Greycee and how much joy she has given us.  I'm sure by now you know that. I want you to know how far reaching your good work has gone here in Alsip.  It has created what I call the circle of love.

Louie started walking Greycee around the block almost the second we got her.  "Heel Greycee"   Heel Greycee"  Heel Greycee" You knew where he was just by listening.  "Pay attention girl"  "Good Girl"  "No,no Greycee"  I swear at times, it was embarrassing..  But he never gave up.  At first it was just a small circle. One block over. One block back.  A tired man, just home from work, and a frightened grey dog trying to understand.

Hour after hour, day after day, week after week.  Fewer times to call out "Heel Greycee"  "Pay attention girl"  "Good girl, Greycee".   And then as the length of the walks grew and the circle of the walk got bigger, the most wonderful thing started to happen. Cars would stop and pull alongside Louie and Greycee as they walked.  "I say, how's the little girl doing today?"   A smile and the answer, "She's just great!-almost perfect I would say".   People stopped mowing their lawns, washing their cars and came to the street to see her pass.  "She's doing better". " She's doing great!" Can I pet her?"  "Do you think she'd like this treat? "

One very sweet older lady came rushing to the street one day to ask ,"What kind  of dog is she?  I see you pass.  I was just wondering,  She's so lovely you see.  I have cats.  They would never let Greycee come in to our house, but I just had to come out to see.

In December, Greycee completed her basic obedience.  She took the top dog award.  The whole neighborhood celebrated.  Our neighbor came to the door on Christmas with a bag filled with gifts for Greycee.  Greycee received a Christmas card from the Lab who lives two doors down.  It was a lovely card of him with his Christmas stocking in the background.  The most important thing for you to know is that the circle of love that started so long ago when you took Greycee from the kill center and loved her and cared for her has grown and grown and grown.

The most amazing thing about a circle filled with love is that no matter how much you give, it comes back to you double fold.

Duke and his new family

life with Duke has been wonderful. He is such a good boy and very loving. He behaves well in our apartment; not making messes or tearing anything up. He enjoys his walks, but is a little disappointed that he has to sleep on his own bed in our bedroom.

His first night home he had the luxury of sleeping between us, but after a night of kicking and pushing me (and then trying to slog through Monday with 3 hours of sleep) he is sleeping in his own bed. He seems to like it now though, maybe he felt just as crowded as we did on our bed. Anyway, we are so lucky to have been
matched with such a wonderful guy!

We are both very excited to be a part of such a great organization. We were very impressed with the process involved in adopting Duke; we know that you are truly looking for the best in the rescued Weimaraners. Thank you again for doing what you do!......

Eddie and his new family

Just thought I'd better drop you a line about how Eddie is settling in.

The first night he was like a lost soul, just wandering around, he  wouldn't even sit down. But he went to bed OK and slept through the night. Wal-Mart had everything we needed, so we bought a crate and all the other bits and pieces.

We've had a couple of accidents when we didn't understand that he needed to go outside RIGHT NOW. He doesn't bark, he just stands at the door. He'll learn to bark or go fetch someone.

On the  journey home we decided that as he had only had the name 'Eddie' for a few weeks we could get away with changing his name. He's now Max.

Anyway it's getting to be like he's been here for ever. He's settled right in, stopped wandering around the whole time, now he sits at our feet or at least nearby.

Thank you for fixing us up with this wonderful dog.

Sam I am

Dear Grand Rapids Mom and Dad, Okay, so even though I missed everybody last night my new parents said I did very well.  I was a little bit wiggly in the car and thought it was fun to try and sneak in the front seat every now and then…but by the time we got to Lansing I was tired and took a good nap.

When we finally got to my new house I sure had a lot of things to sniff!!!  I had to go from room to room and look at and smell EVERYTHING.  I’m still not used to all the new noises yet, like the coffee grinder or that thing in the kitchen that beeps when the dishes are clean…   I got a bunch of new toys and wasn’t sure which one to play with first so I’d keep going back and forth to all of them.  I ate a lamb and rice bone, pulled the fuzzy stuff off of a tennis ball and kept squeaking my new stuffed bear.

My new parents even had a really nice dog bed for me in their bedroom but I preferred sleeping with them and settled right down at the foot of the bed and slept all night.  I’m still not too thrilled about their back yard set up as I can’t just come and go as I please – they put me on this long cable which hampers my exploring and smelling – I find that kind of rude but they tell me it’s safer that way… This morning we went to the Farmers Market and my new mom bought a bunch of funny shaped orange things to put outside…people kept coming by and petting me and saying I was handsome (but I already knew that).

Only one scary thing to tell you – my new house has a loft in it on the second floor that overlooks the family room.  When I went up there to explore, I couldn’t figure out how to get back down and started crying – my mom laughed at me but she came and rescued me so I didn’t cry any more – whew…

I’ve been too busy to eat breakfast unless my dad hand feeds me…but I heard we are going to PetsMart later on today so maybe I will get some more new food…  Well, I gotta go outside now with my new mom and set those orange things up that we bought at the market.

I miss you guys (it’s a little too quiet here).  I’m so lucky I got to live with you for as long as I did cuz my new mom says she can tell I was well loved and am a happy boy.   Gotta go – write soon Love, Nicky

Bo

I wanted to update you on BO!!  We fostered him last fall and fell in love, so we added him to our family.  I caught my husband telling him he was a little Weasel cause he weaseled his way into our hearts.   He has been a great addition to family!!  I love that he is such a mommas boy. Only problem our king sized bed just isn't big enough for 3 Weims and 2 adults!!

Conner  Conner playing in the snow

Hello, I just thought I would let you all know how Conner was doing. We have had him for 2 months now, and he has adapted very well. He free roams during the day when we are at work, he is a pro at counter surfing, and I do think he will be a gold medal contender. He knows when it is bed time and when he hears the treats come out its off to the crate to wait for his bedtime snack.

With the cold weather recently, he has worked his way to sleeping between my wife and I on our bed, to keep us warm. He plays well with his new brother (Klein the cat ) they love to play hide and seek, and even sleep together at times. It was rough for the first 3 weeks or so with his new brother getting used to him and vice versa. The Vet absolutely loved him and says he is beautiful, and couldn't believe we got him from a rescue.

He is up to 70 pounds and loves to throw that weight on your lap. Deep down I think he believes he is a tiny lap dog. We were blessed to have found such a well mannered dog, none of the horror stories you hear about these dogs has been seen in him, and we feel very lucky.

Update: He is doing just awesome, he loves playing outside and he is such a good boy we don't ever crate him anymore for anything. He still thinks he is little and likes to lay on top of you.

I get nothing but compliments on how nice he looks from everyone who meets him.

P.S. He did graduate Good Dog 101 with high honors, she was very impressed with him.!

Update on Amber:

We graduated Amber to good dog status the other day. She had been an "almost a good dog" for a while but went a week without doing anything. I promised her if she could go 7 days in a row I would promote her.
